At the beginning of May, it seems all attention turns to women. We are bombarded with advertisements urging us to splurge on the special moms in our life. And so we buy flowers and jewelry, we plan brunches, we bake pretty desserts. And if we’re like most women, we do all of this without regard for ourselves.
Women, especially moms, tend to take on more and more to ensure that life runs smoothly. And we often push our own needs to the bottom of the list.
We need to take care of ourselves in order to take care of others. So let’s make May the month in which women put themselves first. Here are some ideas:
- Schedule a massage. It’s relaxing, it feels good, and it’s great for your physical well-being.
- Let someone else take care of dinner. They can plan and cook a meal, order takeout or even take you out to dinner – who cares as long as someone else is handling it?
- Go for a walk. It reduces stress, and physical activity has numerous physical and mental health benefits. Not to mention it’s a great opportunity to catch up with a friend if you decide to bring along a walking partner.
- Curl up with a good book or new magazine. Or even binge on a couple episodes of your favorite TV show.
Feel like you just don’t have time to do anything that only benefits you? Pick an activity and put it on your calendar. Does it feel silly to schedule time for a walk? Maybe. But if it’s on your calendar, you’re much more likely to treat it as an appointment and do it.
