Summer often feels like one big vacation. Even when you don’t actually go anywhere. The sunny days and warm evenings lend themselves to cookouts, cocktails on the deck and daytrips. And with those carefree days and nights, our attention to wellness can easily slip. Here are five tips to keep you on track while still enjoying all that summer has to offer.
1. Keep Moving
It can be really tempting to spend your time outside sitting in a deck chair or lounging by the pool, especially when we’re in the middle of a heat wave. But regardless of the weather, it’s always important to take stretch (or movement) breaks. You don’t have to go through a full sun salutation every hour, but you should make sure to at least periodically get up and walk around for a few minutes or roll your shoulders.
Movement is especially important when you travel. Sitting in a cramped airplane or with your foot on the gas for hours at a time can cause some serious kinks in your fascia. Fortunately, a little self-care goes a long way. If you have massage therapy balls, you can use them to target the areas that are sore (I list easy travel massages here: https://carolkennedylmt.com/try-yoga-tune-up-balls/). But even without therapy balls, you can still negate the physical pain of travel by making sure to take daily stretching breaks.
2. Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is vital in the summer. Between the heat, being more physically active and the dehydrating effects of alcohol and foods commonly associated with summer (chips, hot dogs and processed sweets like cookies, for example), you’re at risk of dehydration. If you’re irritable, have a headache or feel sluggish, you may already be dehydrated. How much water you need to drink each day depends on a variety of factors, like your activity level and what you ate that day. To ensure you’re staying hydrated, make sure to drink water when you feel thirsty. And you can always do the pee test – if your urine is light in color, you’re on the right track.
3. Make Time for Yourself
Sometimes we forget how hectic summer can be. From traveling to parties to impromptu cookouts, it’s easy to feel like you are constantly on the run. Everyone needs a little downtime every so often to recharge their batteries – some more often than others. Only you know how often you need to recharge, but ensuring you do so will keep you from feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Making time to care for yourself is important in every season.
4. Eat Seasonally
One of the best parts of summer is the bounty of fresh produce found at farmers’ markets and supermarkets. Now is the time to fill every snack and meal with plump heirloom tomatoes, juicy berries and crisp greens. Not only will you be sneaking extra nutrients into your day, but your meals will be incredibly fresh and flavorful. As a bonus, many of the fruits and veggies available now (watermelon, cucumbers and zucchini, to name a few) have a high water content, which means eating them will help you stay hydrated.
5. Have Fun
Most importantly, enjoy your summer! Take a hike in that park you’ve been meaning to check out, visit a that local farm stand you keep driving by, take your kids to a splash park – and jump
in the water with them. Whatever you like to do during the summer, get out and do it. Nothing improves your mental wellness like relaxing and having a good time.
With these tips, you will be able to enjoy your summer while still maintaining your commitment to wellness. And for an extra boost of good health, don’t forget to schedule your next massage therapy appointment!
